MATH 1100 COLLEGE ALGEBRA Section 007

Instructor: Gábor Hetyei
Office: Fretwell 335F, Phone: 687-2543, E-mail: ghetyei@uncc.edu
Office hours:  Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays 2:00-3:00 pm or by appointment.
Text: College Algebra- Concepts and Models, sixth Ed., by Michael Sullivan.
Topics: See the attached tentative schedule.
Attendance: Required. For each class missed the student will get a 0.5 % reduction of his/her total score (but not to exceed 10%).
Quizzes in the Lab and bonus marks:
  • You must be enrolled in one of the labs (any of L01-L30)
  • You will be writing a quiz each week in your lab
  • You should buy a new book or supplement to get access code for the on-line supplement CourseCompass
  • You should attempt each of the on-line quizzes to get the bonus marks.

Bonus marks:Your grade on each week's quiz will be computed as the BEST OF either your in-lab quiz taken out of 20, or your in-lab quiz out of 10 PLUS 10 free marks for submitting a passing score (60 %) on that week's on-line quiz by the following Sunday. Remember that the system only records your last submitted attempt. So if you have passed the quiz but tried it again and failed, the system will not remember that you had passed before and will only record the failing score, unless you keep trying until you reach the next passing score.

(TIP: be sure to attempt the on-line quiz before your lab to get the extra practice)

Once you have an access code: go to students.pearsoned.com When accessing the first time, you must then register (to get your quizzes recorded!), after that you click on "Log in" .  Your first time in, you must also "adopt" our course. As of now, our Course ID is dow70207.

Tests: Test I: Monday September 17   Test II: Wednesday October 17
Test III: Friday November 16.   Tests will be held in class.
Common Final: Saturday December 8 2001, 11:30am - 2:30pm. The place of the final exam will be given later by the department.
The Departmental Final Exam is cumulative. Missing the Final Exam will result in an automatic F Grade regardless of your performance on other exams.
No makeups: There will be NO make-up quizzes or tests. If a student’s final exam score is higher than one of the other test scores, the final exam score will be used to replace the lowest test score. This, however, is not a license for you to miss an exam or a quiz and is provided only as a back up against any emergency. In case you miss a test for some emergency you need to provide documentation (for example, a Doctor’s certificate in case you were very sick).
Evaluation: Grades will be based on: Attendance 10%, Quizzes 15 %, each Test 15 %, Common Final 30%.
Tentative grading schedule: 90 - 100 % A, 80 - 89% B, 70 – 79% C, 60 – 69 % D, 0 – 59% F
Class meeting: Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays 1:00-1:50 PM   in Friday 17.
Rules of the Classroom: Due to the large class size, we have to implement strict rules in the classroom to ensure that students' right of learning is protected. Please observe the following:
  • No conversations during class. If you really have to ask someone something important, keep it short and keep your voice down. People who talk loudly or disturb the class in any other manner will be asked to leave the classroom. Repeated offenders will be reported to university officials.
  • Students without proper registration are not allowed to attend the class. The instructor has the right to check students ID's during classes and exams.
  • Students are not allowed to leave the classroom in the middle of the class, except for going to the bathroom, or emergencies. If you know that you have to leave the class early with a valid reason, let the instructor know before class starts.
