Text: Applied Calculus for the Managerial, Life, and Social Sciences: A Brief Approach, by Soo T. Tan ISBN-13: 9781305367227.
Prerequisites: Credit for MATH 1100 or MATH 1103 or a score of 18, or more, on the Mathematics Placement test, or placement by the department.
Topics: Sections 1.4, 2.1-2.6, 3.1-3.5, 4.1-4.5, 5.1-5.6, 6.1-6.7
Attendance: Required. Each absence reduces your total score by 1% (not to exceed 3%). Furthermore, having 8 or more absences results in an automatic course grade of F! Every absence is counted toward the limit of 7 absences, even excusable ones.

The final exam will be cumulative. If you have a valid reason for missing one of the tests, I will use your final exam score to replace the test score.
Calculator policy: Only TI-84 calculators and below (or their equivalents) are allowed during tests and the final. You can use your calculators only to perform the four basic operations (+,-,/,*) and raising to a power. For anything else you must show your work.
No Makeups: There will be NO make-up tests. If you miss a test because of an emergency and provide valid documentation, your score for the test missed will be based on your final exam score. Keep in mind that a total number of 8 absences (even if excused for test scoring purposes) results in an automatic course grade of F.
Homework: Some of the homework will be due online using Webwork, some will be handed in on paper. Assignments of both kind will be accessible through the Canvas page of our class. Past due assignments will be rejected.
Accessing your scores: Your scores (except for the final exam score) will be available on Canvas. Only use this resource to double check your raw scores and absence numbers. Percent scores displayed on Canvas may be incorrect! The built-in formulas used by the system do not necessarily agree with the formula we use, see the next item.
Evaluation: Grades will be based on: 3% for attendance, 16% for the homework, 17% for each of the tests, and 30% for the final.
Tentative grading scale: 90 - 100 % A, 75 - 89% B, 60 - 74% C, 50 - 59 % D, 0 - 49% F. (This scale is applicable only if you have 7 or less absences.)
Rules of Academic Conduct:
  1. No conversations during class. People who disturb the class in any manner will be asked to leave and counted absent twice. Cell phones have to be turned off.
  2. Laptops and tablets are only allowed for note taking.
  3. Students must have proper registration to attend the class. The instructor has the right to check student IDs during classes and exams.
  4. Signing the attendance sheet and leaving early constitutes a serious academic misconduct, when discovered, the minimum penalty is being counted absent three times.
  5. Students are allowed and encouraged to seek help in understanding any problems referenced in the notes and book assignments. Students may receive some guidance on homework problems (if using a tutor, it is recommended that the tutor work a similar problem to explain the concept and allow the student to find the answer to the problem in question.)
  6. On exam days you may use an approved calculator and a pencil/pen, but nothing else. If you need scratch paper, you can only use one that I provide. All electronic devices and wrist watches must be stowed in a backpack or purse before entering the classroom on test days. Any visible electronic device or device within a student's reach (such as inside a clothing pocket) will be treated as academic dishonesty. Please be sure to use the restroom before entering class as no restroom breaks are allowed during tests.
  7. For more details please refer to University Policy 407, The Code of Student Academic Integrity. Anyone caught cheating, at best, will fail the course, and worst, taken in front of the Academic Integrity Board (AIB) for a hearing on the merits of the offense and with a conviction, removed from the university with a mark on their permanent record.
