Unit 5 Assignment
Problem Statement:
Most people who keep potted plants inside have the issue of lifting their potted plant from the tray that catches the excess water. Typically people will throw this excess water from the tray outside.The purpose of my design is for people not to have to worry about having to lift the plant and remove the tray. My design allows for anyone to be able to acess the excess water from the tray easily and be able to reuse that excess water to water their plant. I have chosen one of my designs from my previous page and designed the parts that would allow for my design to function. The method I chose was the door releasing method, I have created three different types of hinges for this method. After going through each of my modules I have decided which one be best fit for my design. I have broke my module down into components.
Assumptions:
The assumptions for my design is that it will be able to withhold a certain amount of excess water from the plant while also, preventing from the owner having to pick up the plant to remove it from the tray. The tray connected to the plant could possibly overfill with water that is why it would be necessary to release some of the water from the hose bibb into a watering pot.
Decision Matrix
This decision matrix determines which module would be best for my design.
The evaluation criteria vary from cost with a weight of 30%, manufacturability with a weight of 20%, ease of installation with a weight of 10%, mass with a weight of 15% and durability with a weight of 25%. Module 1 has an overall score of 3.70, while module 2 has a score of 3.10 and module score has a score of 3.30. After observing the scores from the decision matrix Module 1 has the best score. Therefore module 1 will be used in my next step of my design. Module 1 consist of a self - lock spring. This only contains 4 critical components.
