Unit 6 Assignment

Home About Me Assignments

Problem Statement:

Most people who keep potted plants inside have the issue of lifting their potted plant from the tray that catches the excess water. Typically people will throw this excess water from the tray outside. The purpose of my design is for people not to have to worry about having to lift the plant and remove the tray. My design allows for anyone to be able to acess the excess water from the tray easily and be able to reuse that excess water to water their plant. I have chosen one of my designs from my previous page and designed the parts that would allow for my design to function. The method I chose was the door releasing method. After deciding which hinge I would use in my design, I did drawings of the components of the hinge to show the dimensions and tolerances for each component. A full assembly drawing was completed as well to show how to assemble my entire design together. The parts of my desing consist of a pot then a filter is put inside to catch the dirt and a door with two self-closing hinges.

Assumptions:

The assumptions for my design is that it will be able to withhold a certain amount of excess water from the plant while also, preventing from the owner having to pick up the plant to remove it from a tray. The door on the bottom of the pot would be used to release the excess water into a watering pot so the user could possibly reuse this water if they preferred to.

Decision Matrix

This decision matrix determines which component is the most crucial for my design to operate. The evaluation criteria vary from cost with a weight of 20%, manufacturability with a weight of 25%, and durability with a weight of 55%. Component 1 and 2 are the same exact component except one is the left leaf and the other is the right leaf both of these had an overall score of 4.30. Component 3 which is the pin had an overall score of 3.70 while component 4 the spring had an overall score of 3.00. Components 1 and 2 had the highest scores because they are the main components of the hinge. The leaves hold the pin and spring in place and allow there to be movement. The door would not be able to open without any of these components but especially the leaves. One of the leaves are placed on to the door while the other one is placed into the wall of pot. Once all of the components are assmebled together this will allow for the door to open up and close.

Khayzarn Qubbaj:

Your strategies sketches are very well drawn and easy to understand. Also, your decision matrix is clear and makes sense which design is the best.

Obyda Marzouk:

Your FRDPARRC tables are clear and make sense. Also, I really like the sketches of your strategies. You updated your problem statement well and accordingly to your stratgies.
