A Virtual Tour of China is an OpenInventor ( 1) application allowing the user to interactively explore Chinese culture and society in a 3-D virtual environment. The still images, video and sound clips are from Mr. Aukram Burton's visit to China in 1989. Tibet, Hainan Island, and Guangdong are the regions highlighted with virtual rooms where users can explore various themes as seen by Mr. Burton.
This project is in progress and is a continuation of previous work on the regional virtual environments. This report presents the design of the application and an overview of the implementation of the program. Only new code and changes to previous work (2, 3, 4) are presented. The discussion of design makes extensive use of OpenInventor node notation (5) for describing the code components of the project.
