The desktop computer case has always lacked the degree of mobility since its birth. Cases are also one of the biggest areas for customization for the consumer. The idea of building a case with mobility built in, limits the area of customization, thus the idea of building an additional component was thought of. The “cart” like design allows consumers to still choose from the wide range of cases, while also purchasing a cost effective “cart” that gives the case of their choosing a mobility factor. This freedom is given by using a contoured bottom with sled like tendencies, and a handle on the front to grab. The footprint of this cart is wide enough for the biggest cases on the market, while also keeping itself hidden under smaller cases.
Assumptions :
My design is based off the assumption that everyone has a traditional rectangular computer case, that is located on the floor. The footprint of the case is also 8” x 13.50” within 1/2” in either direction.
The components phase was tough, as my design is advertised as an extremely cost-effective solution for adding a degree of mobility to a computer case. My design started as one component, and I broke it up into three components for this project. The handle is a component of the cart, but instead of fastening the handle to the part and having to add bolts and hardware in the final packaging. I decided to still use it as a component as it has its own geometries, while also keeping it attached to the frame. The rubber grips on the top of the frame are also a component, as I wanted something to capture the computer case and help it stay attached to the frame. While doing so I uncovered the risk of the rubber grips not capturing every type of case on the market. So, I decided to make the rubber grips have an adhesive on the bottom to allow the user to place them wherever they seem fit. The frame is the main component that captures the whole idea of this design.
Learning to understand, components do not always have to be separate parts, and how to apply that to this project was extremely helpful.
Your design has come along nicely. The dry box for your phone, is especially useful and I see many uses for it myself. I would work on making the design a little more unique.
