Course Description: This course is foundations course dedicated to the examination of the field of curriculum study, with particular emphasis on the change process. Historical and current issues of education al interest are also reviewed.
Course Rationale and Relationship to Current Programs and Professional Standards: The concept of curriculum evades definition. This course serves as a foundation to understanding the nature of curricula in America’s schools. It provides a forum for the discussion and clarification of the rather nebulous issues in curriculum in American schools. In addition, it also provides historical and current perspectives to the issues of educational reforms, with a view to helping participants keep apprised of the American educational landscape, and to integrate their knowledge of the issues with their emerging expertise in teaching.
The course responds to the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE), Interstate New Teachers Assessment and Support Consortium (INTASC), North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (DPI) standards (adopted 3-7-02), and guidelines from other professional organizations that focus on creating instructional opportunities for diverse learners.
