COLLEGE ALGEBRA
(MATH 1100-006, Fall 2006)

Instructor: Gábor Hetyei
Office: Fretwell 335F, Phone: 687-2543, E-mail: ghetyei@uncc.edu
Office hours:  MW 10:00-10:50 am, 1:15-1:45 pm, or by appointment.
Text: College Algebra essentials, second Ed., by Robert Blitzer.
Topics: See the tentative schedule.
Attendance: Required. Each unexcused absence reduces your total score by 0.5% (but not to exceed 10%). You will be fully responsible for materials missed. If you have at most five absences, I will assume they were emergencies, without investigation. In the unlikely event that you have more absences, present all your documents during the last two weeks of classes. Before that time I collect only excuses for activities mandated by another UNCC department. All unexplained absences count, if you have more than five!
Quizzes: There will be in-class quizzes every week, and weekly assignments will be posted online using Webwork. Your Quiz score will be based on your performance on these assignments. Instructions on registering to and using Webwork are posted on the homepage of the class.
Tests: Test 1: Monday Sep 18, Test 2: Monday Oct 16, Test 3: Monday Nov 13.
Tests will be held in class.
Common Final: Friday December 8, 11:30 am - 2:30 pm.
The place of the final exam will be given later by the department.
The Departmental Final Exam is cumulative and worth at least 30% of your course grade. Missing it results very likely in a course grade of F.
No makeups: There will be NO make-up tests. The worst one of the following will be dropped: Quiz score (includes Webwork), one of the test scores. If you do extremely well on the final, I will be willing to calculate your score based on: Attendance 10%, Quiz 13%, each Test 13%, Common Final 51%. If you miss a test for some emergency and provide valid documentation, I will replace the score of the test missed by your final exam score.
Evaluation: Grades will be based on: Attendance 10%, Quiz 20%, each Test 20%, Final 30%.
(The worst of the four 20% items will be dropped.)
Tentative grading scale: 90 - 100 % A, 75 - 89% B, 60 - 74% C, 50 - 59 % D, 0 - 49% F
Class meeting: MW 11:00 am-12:15 pm in Denny 200.
Rules of the Classroom: Due to the large class size, we have to implement strict rules in the classroom to ensure that students' right of learning is protected. Please observe the following:
  • No conversations during class. People who disturb the class in any manner will be asked to leave the classroom, counted as absent twice, and reported to university officials.
  • Students must have proper registration to attend the class. The instructor has the right to check students ID's during classes and exams.
  • Students are not allowed to leave the classroom in the middle of the class, except for going to the bathroom, or emergencies. If you know that you have to leave early for a valid reason, let the instructor know before class starts. An attempt to sign the attendance sheet and leave may be counted as four unexcused absences! I also reserve the right to report the incident as cheating.
