Charlottean Ashley Reiter is taking her knowledge of chemistry and mathematics to the other side of the glove this summer. Lodz, Poland, was the first stop for Reiter, a much-honored 1991 graduate of the N.C. School of Science and Mathematics in Durham. There, as one of four students from across the United States named to the National Chemistry Team, she placed 39th and won a bronze medal at the International Chemistry Olympiad July 6-15.

She was the first North Carolinian to make the team in the eight-year history of the competition, sponsored by the American Chemical Society. Reiter came in second among all females at the international competition and was the highest-ranking bronze medalist. The U.S. team placed fifth overall; China was first.

The Soviet Union was her next destination. She is one of 25 U.S. students and five teachers selected for the American Regions Mathematics League-Soviet Exchange this summer. Participants, recruited from top students and teachers, are to spend two weeks studying advanced math topics with their Soviet colleagues.

Reiter is the daughter of Harold and Betty Reiter.
