[ List of Lectures | Math 1120 Index ]

Assignment

Test on Friday covering all of chapter 4. Of course, you must know the material in chapter 3 as well (rules of differentiation, etc.) inorder to do chapter four.

Brief review of the lecture

We discussed the quidlines for optimization on page 345. It is especially important to assign a letter to each variable mentioned in the problem and to carefully write down the meaning of the variable. What function is being optimixed? Is it expressible as a function of a single variable? If not can some of the variables be solved for and replaced? Don't forget to use one of the tests (first derivative or second derivative) to prove that the critical point found is the location of the type of extremum that you're interested in.

We worked the inventory problem (Example 5) and the Charter Flight problem (#15) in class.
