SUPER COMPETITION FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS HELD MARCH 9, 2009

The UNC Charlotte Super Competition is an outreach event consisting of a day of academic competitions for high school students held annually in cooperation between the departments of Mathematics and Statistics, Chemistry, Physics and Optical Science, and the College of Education's Center for Mathematics, Science and Technology Education. The event this year, as in most recent years, was held the first day of UNC Charlotte's Spring Break, on March 9, 2009.

MATHEMATICS CONTESTS

This year 138 students participated in the comprehensive mathematics contest from 16 schools, and 76 students participated in the Algebra II contest from 13 schools. The students and teachers had the opportunity to hear a talk by Garrett Mitchener of the College of Charleston, entitled Wavelets, Language, Images, and Geometry. Garrett was a regular competitor in the competition when he was a high school student back in the 1990's.

The top winners in the Comprehensive Mathematics division were Bryce Taylor of Mt. Tabor High School; Brendan Fletcher of Charlotte Home Educators Association; David Lucia of Providence Day School; Kevin Lang of Myers Park; Elizabeth Shen, Myers Park; Sungmin Lim, Butler High; Shannon Taylor, Mt. Tabor High; and Sam Brinkley of Providence Day School. The top fourteen students in the Comprehensive division qualified to go on to the state level mathematics contest, to be held on Thursday, April 23, 2009, at the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics.

The top eight individuals in the Algebra II division qualified to go on to the state finals, to be held on Thursday, April 30, 2009.  For more information on the Algebra and Comprehensive state-level competitions, see the state contest website at http://courses.ncssm.edu/goebel/statecon/state.htm.

Trophies went to the top five students in each category. Team trophies went to school winners in two categories: inside Mecklenburg County and outside Mecklenburg County. The top overall school was again Providence Day School. The individual and team results are listed below.
