Jonathan Marks

In 1738 a chimpanzee made it alive to London, and was widely displayed. It was seen by Buffon, who was in England at the time. This engraving accompanied an article in a scholarly journal (Nova Acta Eruditorum) 1739, which introduced the word “chimpanzee”.
