Jonathan Marks

Buffon differentiated chimpanzees from orangutans as “the jocko” and “the pongo” but initially considered them to be large and small manifestations of the same species in 1766.  Some years later, with more information, and greater attention paid to the biogeography, Buffon came to see them as different species.
