FIELD TRIP We will be going on a field trip to collect samples of American Chestnut leaves. It appears that it will be very hot and sunny, so everyone needs to be prepared. Below we have listed
things students should bring, and we are listing some things we will bring. We welcome suggestions if it appears to you that we have missed something!
- Permission slips
- Long pants (poison ivy is everywhere)
- Protective shoes
- Hat
- Sunglasses
- Sunscreen*
- Light backpack
- Lunch
- Water*
- Sun cover-up for neck and arms
- Cell-phones - with cameras would be especially good for recording data
Three teachers, three graduate students and three TAs will accompany the students on the field trip. We will make sure that we have the following
- extra drinking water
- mosquito repellant
- extra sunscreen
- notebooks and pens (the students must maintain these throughout the camp)
- camera
- sample collection bags
- first-aid kit
- freezer with dry ice for preserving samples

DAILY We will spend part of every day in the lab - because of safety this means there are some requirements for dress. These are going to be long, active days, please be sure that students have breakfast and lunch, whether
through the school or bringing something from home.
- On the first day we will need to have emergency contact information and relevant medical information (allergies, for example)
- Shoes that enclose the feet (no sandals, flipflops or clogs)
- Knee-length skirts, shorts, etc.
- Shirts that can be tucked in, with sleeves that are either tight to the wrist or do not come below the elbow
- some way to tie back long hair
- Notebooks and pens
We will have available the following
- lab coats
- lab gloves
- protective eyewear
