Systems for IoT-Cloud-Edge (SysICE) Research Group


The SysICE group researches system software for the IoT-Cloud-Edge.


The IoT-Cloud-Edge enables us to embed intelligence deep into living environments through a combination of IoT embedded sensors (which include video cameras), and information processing and storage (often AI based) at the edge, and cloud. This has myriad applications in a number of areas including smart city (for example pedestrian safety), transportation (for example, autonomous driving), health care (for example, patient monitoring), public safety (for example, crime detection), and augmented/virtual reality (metaversea).


From a systems point of view technical challenges include, large data sizes, low latency requirements for real-time decision making, data privacy, cybersecurity, minimal energy footprints, device heterogeneity, massive scale, cost constraints, and a decentralized ownership structure. System software for the IoT-Cloud-Edge seeks to simplify the programming, management, and operation of IoT-Edge-Cloud systems for applicaition developers, and operators so that end-users have a seemless experience.
