My name is Khayzaran Qubbaj.I am a second year Mechanical engineering student here at UNC Charlotte and I spend some most of my time horsebackriding or painting.I chose Mechanical engineering because I have always been fascinated by the process of design, innovation and manufacturing that goes into things. I have particularly developed a passion for Biomedical engineering and the process of designing medical devices and much more. I am excited to learn the ins and outs of the innovative design and manufacturing processes, as well as leanring more about 3D pritning.
The three designs that I think had the greatest effects on mankind would be the computer, x-ray machine and microwave. The x-ray machine has allowed people to detect various kinds of health problems early on and without having the need to go through surgery. The computer goes without saying, as it has changed the way of life and has allowed people to access various resources as well as it has allowed the engineering design process to be much more acessible and innovative, with the help of the internet. Finally, Microwaves have provided people with the opportunity to make food in a fast and easy method, even in the smallest of all places such as a dorm.
The handheld citrus squeezer is a simple yet mighty design that has enabled people to squeeze citrus fruits hassle and seed free. The squeezer was Patented by Robert V Derrah.
1. The handles of the squeezer are hinged at a pin to allow for an almost 90 degree opening making it easier to insert the fruit.
2. The inner cup of the squeezer is perforated which allows for a seedless squeeze.
3. The silicon cover over the handle, allows for an easier and more secure grip.
4. The deep curved cups allow for the inner and outer cups to fit right into each other, therefore allowing for a more clean squeeze without crushing the fruit(as shown in the image above).
1. If the squeezer was made of ceramic, it would be too heavy for a handheld gadget as well as it is extremely expensive and difficult to mass produce. The cermaic material would push too hard down, which could lead to crushing the fruit.
2. If the squeezer was made out of wood, it would be lighter in weight, and it will be able to get the job done, but it would be expensive and tricky to mass produce as well.

The squeezer is manufactured globally, and can be manufactured from stamped sheet metal. The upper handle can be raised to insert fruit and when pushed down, both handles close on each other, and that gives it the mechancical adavantage of making it easier to squeeze down on the fruit without having to push down too hard.
A problem that I would like to solve in MEGR 2156 is the struggle of not always having somthing to lay the kitchen utensils on while cooking. I always tend to put the utensil on the counter which is not the most sanitary method, therefore I would like to design a removable attachment that could be placed on a wide variety of utensils. This would help with solving the problem while cooking as it would be a collapsable and adjustable attachement that would not take up space and would be able to fit on a wide variety of kitchen utensils.
