Assignment #5: Components

Problem Statement:

The purpose of this design is to provide people with a 3 in 1 solution for storing toilet paper, displaying "in use" toilet paper as well as providing a trash can to dispose of used toilet paper. I have developed 3 different modules and I will have to determine the best module, and using that I will evaluate the components that make up the sub-assembly.

Assumptions:

My assumption is that the toilet stands at about 17-19 inches off the ground, therefore the designs were made to accomodate to that.As well as providing a cost efficient, hassle-free product that will solve the daily struggles of not having enough bathroom storage as well as not having a toilet paper holder within reach.

This decision matrix is used to determine the best module, from which the components will be analyzed accordingly. It allows us to compare the modulues in regards to the mobility, ease of assembly, safety and manufacturability.Module 1 was the best modlule as it had the highest rating for its mobility, safety an ease of assembly, which are the top criteria.Module 2 was in the second place due its low rating for the manufacturability and safety. Finally,Module 3 had the lowest rating due to its poor mobility function which is one of the most important criteria that allowed us to determine and move forward with Module 1.

The Gantt Chart for this project will be updated continually as I get to work on more assignments.

This component is the considered to be the connecting point between the pivot which is the base of the connection to the rotaional arm. Therefore my solid model consistes of a bolt that is not threaded all the way through, to allow for the smooth rotation of the arm, but will still be able to sit in the pivot hole and rotate in there. The material I decided to go with is stainless steel as it is a sturdy enough yet lightweight material.

This solid model of the second critical component represesnts the pivot, where the pivot in this case acts as a base for the bolt to fit in, where it will provide the bolt with a hole to allow for the rotaion of the bolt which is connected to the arm. The material choosen for this component is stainless steel.

Lessons Learned

  • I Learned that it is very critical to give myself as much time as possible to do these assignemnts, because they always take longer than expected
  • I learned the importance of decision matrix and how helpful it is in narrowing down the modules .
  • I Learned the importance of being detialed in my designs and work.

Comments to Gunter Hayes

  • Your decision matrix looks well done and it shows how it helped you narrow down your modules, if I would suggest something that would be to place it at the top of the page.
  • Youe FRDPARRC tables look well put together and well done
