William Priestley

My name is William Priestley and I am a sophomore mechanical engineering student with a concentration in biomedical engineering. I am very interested in working with prosthetics in a future career. I am from Wilmington, North Carolina and am interested in surfing, video games and snowboarding. I have always been interested in mechanical devices and have always been interested in discovering how mechanical devices work and understanding how they are able to do the things they do.

The inventions that have had the greatest imapct on the world in the past 150 years in my opinion would be the car, patented in 1886 by Karl Benz, has revolutionized how people travel, allowing for more people to travel longer distances. Another invention that changed the world was the airplane, invented in 1903 by the Wright brothers, the airplane has completely changed long distance travel, allowing people to cross oceans in a fraction of the time as ships. This has also affecting the cargo and shipping industry as well as the manufacturing industry allowing for the recieval of parts or finished products in a fraction of the time. The final revolutionary invention was the internet, with the first workable prototype created in the late 1960's funded by the Department of Defense, the internet has allowed for nearly everyone in the world to connect. This has opened up and revolutionized every industry in some way or the other allowing for more transfer of ideas as well as tutorials and shopping, every industry was impacted by the invention of the interent.

The LED light bulb has become a commonplace feature in most homes, allowing for more energy efficient lighting to save money and power. The LED light bulb was originally patented in 2007 and invented by Ronald Lenk, Carol Lenk and Daniel Chandler. The LED bulb uses a LED or light emmiting diode within the bulb shell which is made of a thermally conductive shell. If a different kind of plastic were used for the bulb then it could become too hot and begin to release chaemicals or even melt. The shell has a bulb shape, this is due to how strong a circular shape is for such a thin materail. Technically the shell can be any shape however with many shapes the integrity of the shell would be comprimised due to how thin the material is. There are multiple different solutions to the problem of light including latterns, incandescent ightbulbs and filament light bulbs.

A problem I experience at home that I would like to solve is problems with cable management on my desk. It can be difficult dealing with all of the cables in a neat and organized way wwhn there isnt anything blacking or hiding the back of the desk. On a flat desk it can be difficult keeping all of the cables looking neat I think I would want to create a kind of housing for the power strip to keep all of the chords in as well as be able to house certain things like a wireless charger.

Creating this website took a substantial amount of time for me and I was struggling with it and still do not think that it is the best I can do. I beieve the website took me about 5-6 hours of work time.
