Assignment 6

Problem Statement

To design an automatic dog door security cover that can be used to open and close doors mechanically with an electronic motor. This device will be able to be set on a timer so that anyone can schedule when the security door raises and lowers. The device will be able to accommodate any sized dog door from small to large. The device will be powered by a Acetal plastic gear used on the side that turns and opens the door via teeth on the security shield. It will be easy to install for the customer and will include all necessary components.

Assumptions

This device should work for any size animal except for in some extreme cases of animal sizes under the condition that the homeowner has the space by their dog door to accommodate for the space needed to house the shield when it is open. There is also the assumption that the owner will know how to set operate the timer or use a potential app to control the shield

Assumptions regarding the calculations are the assumpion that the security door will be made of polyeurethane which is the material used for the density as well as the coefficient of friction. Another assumption is that all motors will turn at 60 rpm

Pugh Decision Matrix

Pugh Decision Matrix

These Criteria were based off of the needs of each componenet to determine the critical component out of all of them. Reliability and safety were rated the highest out of all them with cost being the lowest since the cost should not have as much of an effect on what is critical. The motor got the highest score for reliablity and safety since it is a likley component to fail and if it fails it will be dangerous for the pet using the door. The cost was rated low however due to it being the most expensive component being reviewed. The gear received the middle rating of a 4 for reliability and safetydue to if it fails it can be dangerous to the pet however the gear had a larger safety margin than the motor did making it less likely to fail. The cost was rated in the middle as well due to it being not as expensive as the motor. The door recieved the lowest marks for both safety and reliability with a 3 for both since failure of the door most likely will not represent a danger to the pet. The cost was rated the highest because of the low cost material.

Through the Decision matrix I was able to determine the most critical component being the motor due to its high need for reliability and safety. The gear came in second place needing high reliability and safety however due to having a better safety margin than the motor. The door was rated lowest since it was not critical for the safety of a pet and it not needing as high of a reliability.

Drawings

Drawing of Door

M1

The first drawing is of the door. The chosen material would be polyeurethane.

Drawing of Track

M1

The second drawing is of the track. The chosen material would be aluminum.

Drawing of Gear

This is a drawing of the selected gear. The drawing is not mine and is the property of McMaster-Carr.

Drawing of Motor

StepperOnline Motor Drawing

This is the drawing for the motor. The drawing is not mine and is the property of StepperOnline, there will be a link to their product page below.

Drawing of Assembly

M1

This is the drawing of the assembly. The motor is not shown and the gear is a reference gear not the actual dimmensions of gear used.

Lessons Learned

1. I learned how to make a detailed view on a drawing in Creo Parametric

2. Learned more about Coding in HTML.

3. I learned how to create a bill of materials

4. I learned how to determine the kind of motor needed for a design

Overall your Assignment 6 looks great you did a great job

Your Poster looks great

The scaling on your Decision Matrix looks a bit strange but it is still easily legible
