Assignment #6

DRAWINGS

Problem Statement

Robotics is an increasing factor in modern day automation. As the cost of hardware decreases, providing long term benefits over its opposing counterparts, technology continues to replace tedious tasks once operated by humans, doing so more efficiently with less percent error. For example, Amazon has thousands of robots that work within their warehouse to organize their products for distribution. What is interesting about these robots is that they can move heavy pallets and pivot with immense control. But what if they didn’t have to pivot at all?

For this assignment, I will be designing a multi-directional (agile) part that will enhance the wheel’s degree of motion. Build dimensions are not limited to a certain criterion, however, part dimensions and portions must be logical. Object must be designed to enable a vehicle to maneuver vertically, horizontally, and diagonally to be considered agile. Object must be agile.

Assumptions

For this project, we can assume that any material and machine process may be utilized for creative purpose of the assignment. Concepts are under the impression that a 12v DC motor is integrated. Functionality is the focus for this project; object is assumed to be under light load and will not be calculated. Robot is assumed to only operate on smooth surfaces, under normal conditions.

Decision Matrix

For this decision matrix, the main criteria consist of; assembly, strength, reliability, cost, parts, space, and weight. Each category was given a rating between 1 and 5 with 5 being the highest rating. For this portion of the assignment, assembly and space were given the highest weight for criteria. Reduced spaces allow this product to be more marketable, because a smaller build volume is most desirable. Ease of assembly is also another important factor that allows for the part to be modular and easily manipulated. Part quantity is a sub-criterion of assembly; less parts equates to a simpler build. Cost and weight were the least considered, but still quantified due to its significance and the variable it had between the different components.

Lessons Learned

For this assignment, I learned how to create an exploded view of my assemblies. When creating an assembly, SolidWorks has a feature that allows you to expand the components. This was useful, because it allowed me to create a clear representation of my assembly within my drawings. Each part was easy to specify, and with the exploded view I was able to properly label each component.

Colby, Garrett
Well organized drawings that provide proper tolerances. For one of your criteria under “Summary”, how was importance rated? The engraving was a neat detail to your part.
Hanna, Nicholas The drawings came out great, especially the exploded view of the final assmebly.
