Assignment 1 Assignment 2 Assignment 3 Assignment 4 Assignment 5 Assignment 6

Problem Statement:

Design an automobile wheel for use in "high performance" applications using minimalist design principles.

This wheel should possess the following qualities:

-ideal strength-to-weight ratio,

-optimal power-to-weight ratio/torque efficiency.

-symmetric weight distribution.

-aerodynamic geometry.

-ideal thermal conductivity (e.g. natural brake cooling capability).

The design must be easily manufacturable, such that it may be produced on a massive scale. As such, the need for fasteners shall be avoided. Instead, press fits will be implemented in order to maintain low costs and simplicity.

The wheel will be engineered with some basic assumptions (i.e. standard operating temperature [about 0 deg C to 32 deg C], typical values for torque, friction between the ground and the tire, typical mass of a car, etc. will be used in the design calculations).

Semester Project Gantt Chart:

Assembly.

Each of the components employed in the design assembly has been optimzed for ideal performance and efficiency. Consequentthey, they are fabricated out of anodized aluminum. This material was selected for each componet given its high strength to weight ratio, ideal thermal conductivity, ease of manufacture, and low associated cost.

Lessons learned:

I learned how to troubleshoot component placement definitions in assemblies in CAD software. In addition, I learned how to decide what fit to use and subsequently how to design the fit using tolerances.

Comments:

David Balaj's Website:

-Website maintains simple "clean" design.

-At the time, the website was not complete so an analysis of the CAD drawings could not be completed.

Mitchell Christenberry's Website

-Website design and component desicription is well thought out. You clearly spent a lot of time on this project.

-There was however an issue with viewing the components and downloading the CAD drawings. I would recommend going through the website code.
